Puerto de Luna is a small community located just outside of Santa Rosa. It is currently inhabited by less than 200 people, but holds significant historical value to the region.
Its name, meaning “Gateway of the Moon,” originates from an early European settler, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, a Spanish explorer who noted a full moon rising over the hilltops during his Western explorations.
Rich in history, Puerto de Luna is believed to be where Billy the Kid ate his final meal before his trial in Las Vegas, NM.
The name Santa Rosa evolved from St. Rose of Lima, a chapel built in 1879 by Don Celso Baca, the founding father of Santa Rosa, to honor his mother. While in ruins, the chapel is one of the most visited sites in the city.
Baca settled in Santa Rosa (known then as Aqua Negra Chiquita, “Little Black Water”) after serving as a Captain for the Northern Army in the Civil War. His 1865 home stands directly across the street from the chapel.

Santa Rosa’s stretch of Route 66 was forever memorialized in American film history with the film adaptation of Steinbeck’s epic novel, The Grapes of Wrath. The memorable train scene in the 1940 movie, where Henry Fonda (interpreting Tom Joad) watches as a freight train steams over the Pecos River railroad bridge in the center of town, was filmed right in Santa Rosa.
